The first 6 years of a child's life are most important for the development of a child's brain. And what the brain needs is to be stimulated in every possible way! During the early years kids are often exposed to a variety of activities. But what many a times is missing is being read to!
Researchers discovered that reading stimulates the side of the brain that helps with mental imagery, understanding, and language processing, and that brain activity while hearing stories was higher in the children who were read to at home more often.
With the above being our motivation and lack of a children's library in our neighbourhood as the opportunity, Anahita and I launched the "Our Story Shelf" for children on Feb 4, 2017. On that day, we had the talented storyteller Anumeha Fatehpuria enthrall the kids with her story telling. We also had workshops conducted by external facilitators for dance, cooking and gardening for kids. It been just over a year from that eventful day and its been a funfilled and satisfying journey. It gives us immense pleasure to see kids fall in love with books and reading.
With an effort to make reading a part of a child's growing years apart from the regular membership plans, we conduct story telling sessions on the 2nd and 4th friday's of the month. Our sessions by expert story tellers Gayathri Ravishankar and Vitika Rastogi, bring alive the magic of a book. We follow it up with a game or a song and a craft! We focus on a variety of stories including some topics which are the need of the hour like "Safe Touch" and at the same time have fun when we celebrate festivals through storytelling.
We plan the stories and the sessions in an interactive manner, with the aim to provide kids an opportunity to learn to express themselves, overcome the fear & develop the confidence of talking in groups.
